A video showing a man being assaulted by a mob while a little girl is clinging to him is going viral on social media site X(Twitter). Users are sharing this video and claiming that this is how Muslims are treated in India.

Sharing this X(Twitter), a user by the name of ‘The Saviour’ wrote: “This is how Muslims are treated in India“.

Fact-Check

To investigate the viral video, the DFRAC team converted it into keyframes and reverse-searched it on Google. We found some media reports during this process.

A media report by The Financial Express from 2021 stated: “A 45-year-old Muslim e-rickshaw driver was assaulted by some people in Kanpur while they were chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogans. A video of the incident has gone viral on social media. The man was later handed over to the police. An FIR has already been registered in the case by the Kanpur Police. In the viral video, the daughter of the man was seen clinging to him and pleading with the people holding the man to leave him. According to an NDTV report, the man is a relative of a Muslim family who is in a legal dispute with their Hindu neighbour.”

Moreover, media reports from The Print and Hindustan Times also stated similar facts in the context of the above viral video.

Upon investigating further, we found a statement byte on the X handle of POLICE COMMISSIONERATE KANPUR NAGAR stating that a video of Kachhi Basti near Ramgopal Chowk has come to light. On the complaint of the victim, an FIR has been lodged against some people. Further action is being taken.
