Claim: Several X users (formerly known as Twitter) took to the platform to release a video claiming that Muslim refugees in Japan were causing a ruckus and had also injured a Japanese man. The video was first shared by the user We the People (@ajaychauhan41). He wrote the caption, “Muslim refugees in Japan went on a rampage, causing a major brawl and leaving a Japanese man seriously injured after being thrown to the floor” (Translated into English)
Following the user, other accounts also shared the same claim.
Fact Check
Upon investigation by the DFRAC team, it was discovered that the video in question dated back to October 25th, 2015.
We found a media report by Al Jazeera and South China Post. The reports mentioned that in Tokyo, clashes broke out between Turks and Kurds outside the Turkish embassy during early voting for Turkey’s elections. The confrontation ensued when Kurds tried to exhibit a pro-Kurdish party flag, resulting in injuries and police intervention. Witnesses alleged that supporters of the Turkish government instigated the altercation, possibly intending to interfere with the voting process.
Conclusion
Thus, from the fact check, it is evident that the viral claim is misleading. The video shows Turks and ethnic Kurds brawling near the Turkish Embassy in Tokyo and not Muslim Refugees.
