Misleading claim about NIT Srinagar student being sent Home Without Charges After Posting Derogatory Video

On November 28, 2023, Tuesday, hundreds of students from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar rallied through the streets of Srinagar to express their protest against a student from the institute. He was accused of posting blasphemous content, targeting Prophet Muhammad, on social media.

Soon after the incident, a video of the protest went  Viral with a claim.

What Claim is shared with the Video?

Social Media users are sharing the protest video with the claim that an NIT Srinagar Student was sent home without charges After Posting the derogatory video on Social Media.

It was observed that the primary individuals sharing the claim were predominantly from Pakistan.

Fact Check

During our investigation into the viral claim, we discovered that the Inspector General of Police Kashmir, VK Birdi, addressed the incident in a statement. Speaking to a local media outlet in Kashmir, Gulistan News, the IGP mentioned that the police received information about student protests at NIT Campus, Srinagar. It was revealed that the video, not originally created by the student but shared by a YouTuber, had sparked controversy by hurting religious sentiments.

“The Registrar intervened, educated the student, and legal action was initiated based on the Registrar’s request. Investigations are ongoing,” IGP Birdi said.

Additionally, we also found media reports which shed light on the details of the Incident.

Rising Kashmir published the news about the incident with the caption, “NIT Srinagar student booked for hurting religious sentiments: IGP Kashmir”. The news article mentions – “The incident follows massive protests by NIT Srinagar students against alleged derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad (SAW) by a colleague of a different faith.

Upon receiving information and a letter from the NIT campus Registrar seeking legal action, the police acted under relevant laws.”
