Claim made by the user
B P Gaur Journalist, based in Lucknow shared a screenshot of the viral video on X(Twitter) and claimed: “This is from Dankaur police station of Gautam Buddha Nagar, the financial capital of UP. Please read it and share it or retweet it so that this information reaches the administrative officer of the state capital Lucknow and the government takes it into cognizance”
Fact-Check
To know the truth behind the viral video, the DFRAC team conducted keyword research related to the claims made through the viral video. The team found some media reports during this process. According to media reports, the incident took place in Dankaur, Greater Noida, UP in the year 2015.
What Media Reports reveal
Renowned News website India Today published news on October 15, 2015, with the headline: “Dalit family bares it all after Greater Noida police fail to register their FIR”. In this news, India Today reveals: “Five people, including three women, were arrested on Thursday after they allegedly stripped in a market in Dankaur in Gautam Budh Nagar, to protest the police’s alleged refusal to register a complaint of robbery. However, it was also mentioned: “Some other reports, however, said that the couple was beaten up badly by the cops and stripped naked”.
Moreover, according to news published by the Times of India on Oct 10, 2015, the SHO had dismissed the allegations against him when a TOI reporter spoke to him. “They themselves tore their clothes and created a ruckus on the road,” the SHO had added, but the news further stated: ” Narrating the incident, which she said she had witnessed on Wednesday, the girl said police had behaved brutally with her family, rained blows on them and tore their clothes. There were no lady cops there, the girl said”
Conclusion
It is clear from DFRAC’s Fact-Check that the video showing the family stripping themselves to protest against the inaction of the Police dates back to 2015, not the recent one. Hence, the claim of social media users is misleading
