The Israel-Palestine War has become the recent subject of Headlines these days. Not only this, but it has also drawn a heavy backlash from different countries. Amid this, a video is going viral on social media platforms with the claim stating that Qatar, the gas-rich gulf has threatened to create a global gas shortage, if the bombarding of Gaza continues.
Claim made in the name of Qatar
The first tweet has been done by Qatar_Affairs on X( Twitter) stating: “If the bombing of Gaza doesn’t stop, we will stop the gas supply of the world.”
Claim shared by many users
In addition to that, several social media users shared this claim on X(Twitter) followed by a video showing a translation that suggested he threatened to cut off the world’s natural gas supply to end the Israel-Palestine conflict.
Fact Check
The DFRAC team conducted a reverse-image search which led us to Aljazeera Mubasher’s official YouTube channel where we found a similar video that was uploaded 6 years ago in May 2017. The title of the video read: “Amir of Qatar: the issue of Palestine is the issue of people separated from land and border from the country”.
What did the Media sources say?
Upon Further investigation, we discovered a news article recently published by Dohanews with the headline: “Gaza: Experts debunk fake news on Qatar gas supply threats”. In this article Dohanews mentions: “The ‘Qatar Affairs’ account shared a post on X, Twitter, on Wednesday, alleging “the State of Qatar threatened to stop gas supplies to the world if the bombing of Gaza does not stop.” Qattar_affairs is an account used to try and frame Qatar in a negative light. It masquerades as a legitimate news account and the majority of its content is designed to make it look like a standard Qatar news account.
Further, the news article stated: “The tactic is to give a veneer of plausibility so people are more likely to believe the fake news. Its previous account was suspended, and it has been active in trying to stir up trouble around Qatar before – namely during the Shura council elections,” Marc Owen Jones, an associate professor of Middle East Studies at Hamad bin Khalifa University in Qatar, told Doha News regarding the latest post by Qatar Affairs”.
We also discovered a post on his official Twitter account refuting the above claim.
Moreover, According to the news article published by Express.co.uk, a video of the Emir of Qatar going viral on Twitter is accompanied by a mistranslation suggesting he threatened to cut off the world’s natural gas supply to end the Israel-Palestine conflict. But the reality of the Emir’s full statement is much more nuanced than social media would suggest.
Statement made by Ministry of Foreign Affairs-Qatar
Subsequently, we found a tweet from the official Twitter handle of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs-Qatar indicating that the gas-rich Gulf nation is trying to restore peace by addressing the issue of how to end this conflict.
Conclusion
It is evident from DFRAC’s Fact-Check that the claim stating Qatar will create a global gas shortage amid bombing in Gaza, is completely fake. According to media reports, Qatar has remained a reliable energy partner to other nations around the world.
