In the by-election held on 7 assembly seats in 6 states, as per the results announced on Friday, the INDIA alliance emerged victorious on 4 seats, while the NDA alliance led by BJP won on 3 seats. The Ghosi Assembly Constituency gained significant attention in this by-election. Social media users are claiming that the Samajwadi Party candidate, Sudhakar Singh, defeated the BJP candidate Dara Singh Chauhan by a margin of 63,000 votes.
A Twitter user named Giridhar Rao posted a video along with the following message, “Congratulations to Sudhakar Singh Bais Ji for a resounding victory in the election with a significant margin of 63,000 votes. We extend our gratitude to the Kshatriyas of Ghosi who have demonstrated their unwavering commitment by not surrendering their principles to the BJP-RSS. The Kshatriya pride is still thriving.”
Journalist Sadaf Afrin captioned the video of O.P. Rajbhar as follows: “O.P. Rajbhar was ensuring Dara Singh Chauhan’s victory with 50,000 votes! But the result of the Ghosi by-election is that Dara Singh Chauhan lost by 63,000 votes! O.P. Rajbhar, who set out to become a weather scientist in politics and had also allied with the BJP, found himself in a completely opposite situation! In politics, overconfidence proves to be very harmful!”
Paraminder Amber expresses that the recent election result is not merely a defeat for Dara Singh Chauhan or Om Prakash Rajbhar. It is also a setback for Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Despite the vigorous campaigning by the entire cabinet, Akhilesh Ji’s visit for a single day was enough for him to secure victory with an impressive 63,000 votes. Therefore, it is important to acknowledge that the defeat extends beyond Dara Singh Chauhan and not just attribute it solely to BJP and Yogi Ji.
The Democracy Times Network stated in their post, “Uttar Pradesh: INDIA registered a splendid victory in the Ghosi by-election. Samajwadi Party’s candidate Sudhakar Singh defeated the incumbent MLA Dara Singh Chauhan (BJP) with a margin of more than 63,000 votes.”
Similarly, other social media users are claiming that Samajwadi Party’s candidate Sudhakar Singh has defeated BJP’s candidate Dara Singh Chauhan with a margin of 63,000 votes.
Fact Check
To uncover the truth behind a viral claim, DFRAC team first visited the website of the Election Commission of India. During this time, the team found that Sudhakar Singh, a candidate from the Samajwadi Party, defeated Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Dara Singh Chauhan with a margin of 42,759 votes.
Media reports also state that BJP candidate Dara Singh Chauhan has lost by a margin of 42,759 votes.
Conclusion
It is evident from DFRAC’s fact-check that the viral claim made by Samajwadi Party leader Sudhakar Singh about defeating Singh Chauhan of the Bharatiya Janata Party by 63,000 votes is misleading. Singh had actually defeated Chauhan by 42,759 votes in the Ghosi Vidhan Sabha by-election. Therefore, the claim made by social media users is incorrect.
