A newspaper cutting is going viral on social media. It has been claimed in this cutting that Sonia Gandhi is 12th on the list of the world’s richest leaders. It has been claimed that Sonia Gandhi’s total assets are more than $ 2 billion i.e. more than 1 trillion rupees.

This report has been quoted as saying by the American website ‘Huffington Post World’.

Another user claimed that Sonia Gandhi is the fourth richest woman in the country. “The country also wants to know how Sonia Gandhi became the fourth richest woman in the country. It is clear from Rahul Gandhi’s speech today how much he hates India. Speech: The country does not want CDS, does not want Agniveer, does not want an arms factory”

Fact Check:

The DFRAC team investigated the truth of Sonia Gandhi’s claim of being ranked 12th on the list of rich leaders. Our team first examined the report of the American website ‘Huffington Post World’, which has been quoted as saying. In this context, we found a report from Dainik Bhaskar. This report was published 9 years ago.

“Huffington Post has removed Sonia Gandhi’s name from the list of the world’s 20 richest leaders. The website says that its editors could not confirm how much Sonia’s assets are. ‘

On searching for something else, we found another report from Dainik Bhaskar. This report was published 4 years ago. It has been reported in this report that the news of Sonia Gandhi being a rich woman was also run by Huffington Post. However, Huffington post later deleted the news expressing regret.

According to Sonia Gandhi’s affidavit for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, her assets are worth Rs 9.28 crore.

At the same time, our team saw the list of the 100 richest Indians released by Forbes in the year 2021. Sonia Gandhi’s name is not on this list.

Abp News published a report on the world’s richest politicians on February 8, 2023, titled – “From Sunak to Biden, list of the world’s richest leaders, see photos”. Sonia Gandhi’s name is nowhere in this report.

Conclusion:

It is clear from DFRAC fact check that the viral claim on social media is false. Sonia Gandhi is not the 12th richest woman in the world or the fourth richest woman in the country. Sonia Gandhi’s name is not on the list of rich people released by Forbes for 100 Indians. At the same time, the Huffington Post, which described Sonia Gandhi as the 12th richest woman in the world, had removed the post expressing regret.
