Fact Check: Misleading claim about former Prime Minister Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh goes viral on social media

Nisar Ahmed Siddiqui February 17, 2023
Renuka thumb

There is a verified user named Renuka Jain on Twitter. Renuka Jain has posted a video. In this video, she has wittingly claimed that any Prime Minister of the Congress party assumes office when the former passes away.

It can be seen in the text mentioned in his video that when Jawaharlal Nehru died, Lal Bahadur Shastri became the Prime Minister. After Shastri’s death, Indira Gandhi became the Prime Minister. Rajiv Gandhi became the Prime Minister after Indira’s assassination. Similarly, Narasimha Rao became the Prime Minister only after Rajiv’s death. After this, Narasimha Rao died and Manmohan Singh became the Prime Minister.

Fact Check:

The DFRAC team searched Google to fact-check the claim made in the video. The team found that the claim made by Renuka Jain was false. CNN published a report on May 22, 2004, stating that Manmohan Singh has been sworn in as the Prime Minister of India.

A report published by the Washington Post on May 23, 2004, reported that Manmohan Singh was sworn in as the Prime Minister of India, and administered the oath of office and secrecy by the then President APJ Abdul Kalam.

At the same time, a report published by the BBC said that Manmohan Singh took oath along with 67 ministers. The information was published on May 22, 2004.

At the same time, when our team investigated the death of former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao, we found a Wikipedia of Narasimha Rao, according to which Narasimha Rao died on December 23, 2004.

The then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had issued a press release expressing condolences over Rao’s death. The archive of which is being given here.

At the same time, we found a press release of the then Leader of Opposition and BJP National President LK Advani on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) website. In which Advani expressed condolences on the death of Narasimha Rao.

Conclusion:

It is clear from the fact check of DFRAC that the claim made by Renuka Jain is false. Former Prime Minister Narasimha Rao died only after Manmohan Singh became the Prime Minister.

Fact Check: No, Pakistan’s J-10C Did Not Shoot Down an Indian Rafale Over the LoC Dramatic silhouette of a Chinese-made J-10C fighter jet in mid-flight against a vivid sunset sky, with its afterburner trail illuminated in the twilight. The image was featured in a viral social media post by a Pakistani defense account, falsely claiming that the aircraft had successfully shot down an Indian Rafale jet during an aerial encounter over the Line of Control (LoC). The claim was later fact-checked and debunked by Indian authorities as misinformation.
