Did Snow fall in Mecca, Saudi Arabia on New Year’s Day? Read- Fact Check

A video is going viral on social media. Users who shared this video are claiming that Mecca, the largest holy site of Muslims, got snowfall on New Year’s Eve. By sharing this video, it is claimed that this has happened for the first time in history. 

While sharing this video, a user captioned- “ Snowfall at Kaaba Sharif in Mecca city of Saudi Arabia,

This is the first time in history that so much snow is falling here.

“As God willing”

At the same time, this video is being shared on many other social media platforms including Facebook, and Twitter.

Fact Check:

To fact-check the viral video, the DFRAC team converted the video into some frames. Then reverse search. We found a video uploaded on a Twitter account named Haramain Sharifain (@hsharifain) in reference to the video. In this tweet, the video has been described as fake.

Haramain Sharifain mentioned. “The National Meteorological Centre said in a statement on Sunday that a video clip purportedly showing snowfall at Masjid al-Haram, #Mecca is fake on social media.”

At the same time, many other media organizations have also termed this video as fake.

Conclusion:

It is clear from the fact check of DFRAC that the viral video is fake. There has been no snowfall in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Therefore, the claim of social media users is wrong.
