A video is doing rounds on social media platforms with the claim that Hindu students in St Joseph’s Engineering College in Mangaluru are mocking Muslims by dancing to a Bollywood song wearing Burqa. Along with the video a social media user wrote, “#Mangalore – Hindu students mocking Muslims and burqas in an event at St. Joseph’s Engineering College, #Karnataka @007AliQaQa @TheCognate_ @Muslim @MuslimMirror @AhmedKhabeer_ @Razia_Masood @Umm_e_Meeran.”

Similarly, @CrimeReportInd1 tweeted, “India: Hindu students in an Event at St.Joseph Engineering College, Mangalore students in blatant Islamophobic act seen wearing Hijab and performing obscene steps for an item song mocking Muslim minorities Burqa #hijab #Islamophobia_in_india #Islamophobia.”

Meanwhile, many other social media users have shared this on their social media handles.
Fact Check:
On reverse image search of different frames of the video, the DFRAC team got an article published in ANI dated 9th December 2022 with the heading, “Karnataka: 4 students suspended for ‘burqa’ dance.”

The article mentioned the tweet of the official account of St Joseph Engineering College, Mangaluru. In the tweet, it was mentioned that “The video clip being circulated in social media has captured a part of the dance by students of the Muslim community itself who barged on stage during the informal part of students association inaugural.”

Conclusion:
As clarified by the college, the students dancing to a Bollywood song wearing Burqa were Muslims. Therefore, the viral claim is misleading.
