A picture is getting viral on social media sites in which two men in uniform from the Indian army can be seen carrying a wooden rod on which a woman is hanged.

Many social media users are claiming that the picture is of a persecuted Indian Muslim woman.

A user on Twitter writes in Bangla, “Where are the humanitarians today? No one is watching why Muslims are being persecuted in silent India. No one is in favor of Muslims.” (English Translation)

Fact Check:

To investigate this DFRAC team did a reverse image search and found many news reports on the picture.

According to Wikipedia, Felani Khatun was a 15-year-old Bangladeshi girl, who was shot and killed by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) on 7 January 2011, at the India-Bangladesh border.

Many mainstream media houses like the Economic Times and Times of India have too published this report.

According to the reports On January 7, 2011, a15-year-old Felani, a Bangladeshi immigrant, was shot by a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan while crossing over to Bangladesh at the international border checkpoint at Chaudharihat in Dinhata, Cooch Behar, in West Bengal. Further, the report states that a sum of Rs. Five lakhs as monetary relief to the next of kin of the deceased girl. The amount may be disbursed through the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh.

Conclusion:

Firstly, the picture is not of recent times but 11 years old i.e of the year 2011.

Secondly, the picture tells us the about the struggles that people living in borderline Bangladesh and India have to go through and do not have any communal angle.

So, the image is getting viral with the misleading claim.
