An info graphic in Hindi is getting viral on social media sites with the picture of Mallikarjun Kharge (Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha from Karnataka and a a member of the Indian National Congress (INC) political party). On the infographic there are several claims made on Malikarjun, when translated in English they can be summarized like:
- He owns a property of Rs. 50000 Crores.
- A complex in Bengaluru worth Rs. 500 Crores.
- A House Rs. 50 Crore
- A farmhouse of Rs. 40 Crores
- And a coffee farm in 300 acres.
The infographic is suggested to be shared to the maximum.
Fact Check:
To investigate the viral claim, DFRAC team checked the government site myneta. Info (a site that provides criminal and financial background information on candidates, MPs and MLAs contesting in elections. It also has information on income and other assets)
We started looking for the total cost of assets and property owned by him and his wife together.
The total amount of moveable assets (cars, jewelry etc) owned costs around Rs. 2+ Crores
The total amount of immoveable assets (Property etc) owned costs around Rs. 13+ Crores
Conclusion:
The figures and facts given in the infographics do not match with the official affidavit provided by Mallikarjun Kharge. Thus, social media users are sharing a fake infographic.
