Durga idol immersion is being done across the country. During this, reports of accidents have also come to the fore at many places. During Durga Visarjan in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, many people were washed away due to sudden rise in river water. In this 8 people died, while 30 to 40 people are said to be missing. All the leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, CM Mamta Banerjee have expressed grief over this incident.
At the same time, many types of claims are being made in the context of this incident on social media. A user claimed in the context of this incident that why water was released in the river only during Durga immersion. He has demanded an inquiry into the matter. He wrote- “Deliberate killing of Hindus in West Bengal? Why was the water left at the time of Durga immersion, investigation must be done.

To fact-check the viral claim, we did a simple search on Google. We got coverage from several media houses regarding this incident. Nowhere in these media coverage is there any mention of water being released into the river. Apart from this, it has been told in almost all the media that suddenly the water of the river had increased, due to which this accident happened.
According to the news of Dainik Jagran– “A heart-wrenching accident occurred during the immersion of Durga idol on Vijayadashami day (October 5) in Mal river located in Malbazar of Jalpaiguri district. Due to the sudden rise in the water level of Mal river here, many people got washed away in the river. So far 8 people have been reported dead in this accident. 50 are still reported missing. 14 injured have been admitted to Mal Bazar Hospital. So far 70 people have been rescued in the rescue operation. The rescue operation is still on.”
Apart from this, according to the news, the officials had already warned the people about the rise in water level by announcing to Mike. At the same time, according to ABP News, there was a sudden flood, due to which this accident happened.
