Fact check: Did the exodus of  Hindus from  Kashmir happen during the  “Communist supported” VP Singh government?

It has been claimed by some users on social media that in the 90s, when the situation in Kashmir was unpleasant and Hindus started losing life and property in riots and were forced to migrate, then at that time Communists supported Vishwanath Pratap Singh at the center (VP Singh) government.

A user named Chakradhary wrote “ which has written exactly here- “ Muslim who butchered the Hindus of Kashmir were Jihadis, and the whole plot was created by VP Singh government with the support of communists! Like jihadis communists also dynamically opposed the  Hindu religion and  Indian culture! Government  should ban communist  politics!”

Meanwhile, A user named Pushpendra Kulshreshtha wrote, “The question emerge on the power and party of India  is that, why Muslim is not made the Home Minister of India because Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was made the Home Minister of India on November 8, 1989, in the VP Singh government and on January 19, 1889, 5 lakh Kashmiri Hindus were slaughtered and 3 lakh Hindu girls were raped.”

 Fact check:

In the first tweet, DFRAC did a simple search on Google with the help of some special keywords to fact-check the claim of a user named Chakradhar. The team received several reports published by different media houses quoting VP Singh Sarkar.

A report published by BBC Hindi states that in the 1989 Lok Sabha elections, the Janata Dal got 144 seats. It was decided to form the government with the support of the left members and the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Born on June 25, 1931, in the Daiya royal family, Raja Manda (near Koran, Manda Allahabad) Uttar Pradesh, Vishwanath Pratap (VP) Singh was the tenth Prime Minister of the Republic of India and has also the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. His tenure was  from 2 December 1989 to 10 November 1990.

He sat on the prime minister’s chair in a manipulative political era of non-Congress. He had given the right to reservation to the backward by implementing the recommendations of the Mandal Commission during his tenure despite more pressure and opposition.

Pushpendra Kulshreshtha claimed, “Muslims are not made the Home Minister of India because Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was made the Home Minister of India on November 8, 1989, in the VP Singh government, and on January 19, 1889, 5 lakh Kashmiri Hindus were slaughtered off and 3 lakh Hindu girls were raped. To analyze, DFRAC did some keyword searches on the Internet.

During this time, the team found that the claim that Mufti Mohammad Sayeed became the home minister on November 8, 1989, is false, as Sayeed became the home minister on December 2, 1989. In fact, with the support of the BJP, the VP Singh government was formed on December 2, 1989, which fell on November 10, 1990, as soon as the BJP extracted support. The BJP withdrew its support after the Lalu Prasad Yadav-led government in Bihar stopped LK Advani’s chariot and arrested him.

DFRAC has done a detailed report ‘The Kashmir Files, Fake V/s Fact‘. According to the Economic Times article, the Kashmir Pandit organization claimed that at least 399 Pandits were killed during the exodus in 1990 and 650 in the successive 20 years.

At the same time, in the reply sought by PP Kapoor through RTI, the Government of India itself has said that 1.5 lakh people had migrated from Kashmir and 88 percent of them were Hindus who had migrated from there due to violence and threat in the valley.

At the same time, the government data of the National Human Rights Commission has been mentioned as 219.

According to the report of The Hindu, 219 Kashmiri Pandits were killed and 24000 families of Pandits migrated from the Valley. There are records of only 1.5 lakh migrants leaving the Kashmir Valley. Though 88% of them were Hindus, no such data matches the large number of 5 lakh.

Conclusion:

It is clear from this fact check of DFRAC that VP Singh’s government not only had the support of the Left parties (Communists) but also had the support of the BJP, secondly, according to the report of The Hindu, 219 Kashmiri Pandits were killed while 1.5 lakh Hindus were killed, so the claim being made by social media users is unproven and misleading.
