Agnipath scheme’s announcement has been controversial in India moreover the scheme faced violent protests by the aspirants, soon after it was announced in June. However, the military has mentioned that there will be no rollback of the scheme, under which 75% of recruits will be discharged after four years of service and will receive a one-time severance payment but no pension.
The scheme has also gathered a lot of attention on social media and made it to the news. While some of the news is true the others are false and misleading.
Meanwhile, a user on Twitter writes, “This was bound to happen. Now the Gorkhas are joining the Chinese Army. Bharat Mata ki Jai…..” while sharing a report of the Indian Express.
Fact Check:
To investigate the viral claim DFRAC desk first goes through the report of the Indian Express.
The headline states, “Nepal stalls recruitment of Gorkhas in Indian Army under Agnipath scheme.”
In the report, it was mentioned, that Kathmandu has for now stalled the recruitment of Gorkhas in the Indian Army under the ‘Agnipath scheme’, putting a question mark on the future of a practice that began 75 years ago.
It further mentions that Nepal made it clear that the current recruitment scheme for a period of four years under Agnipath is not in conformity with the provisions of the 1947 agreement. There have been noticeable concerns in Nepal about the future of Gorkha recruits when they retire after four years, and the impact of these out-of-job young men — all in their twenties — on society.
Then, DFRAC desk further investigate using specific key frames and found some other report that states, “Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu has asked the China Study Centre NGO to find out why people of Nepal are joining the Indian Army.”
Again there is no mention of Gorkhas joining Chinese army, if this would have been the case the main stream media would have reported it.
Conclusion:
According to the report, Nepal is not giving the final decision to the government as to whether the Gorkha regiment will join the Agnipath scheme or not. But, there is no mention of Gorkhas joining the Chinese army as such.
