Fact check:

DFRAC’s investigation found that the claim is misleading. Both sides involved in the dispute belong to the Muslim community, and the altercation occurred over a tiffin-related dispute. There is no communal angle to the incident. Salman Bahadur, brother of the victimized shopkeeper Faizan Bahadur, told DFRAC that both parties are Muslims and that the incident had no communal dimension. News At-9 Chief Editor Shadab also told us that there was no religious dispute involved in the incident.

To investigate the viral video, our team conducted a reverse image search of its keyframes using Google Lens. We found coverage of the incident on the News At-9 Facebook page, where the same viral video can be seen. The incident was reported as having occurred over a tiffin-related dispute.

In another video posted by News At-9, the caption states: “Aligarh: Statement of the injured youth following the ‘tiffin’ dispute that took place last night in the Shamshad Market area…” In this video, the injured shopkeeper identifies himself as Faizan Bahadur. Faizan names Huzefa and Salim as the alleged accused.

Further investigation led us to a report by Dainik Jagran, which also identifies the injured shopkeeper as Faizan Bahadur. The report states that Faizan Bahadur’s family owns three shops in Shamshad Market—a general store, a garment shop and a toy shop. A man from the Alambagh area works as an egg seller and had left his tiffin at Faizan’s shop two days earlier. Later, an argument broke out between the man and the shopkeeper over the missing tiffin. According to Faizan, the man had taken his tiffin back that same day and there had been no further dispute. The report further states that the man allegedly arrived at the shop on Thursday night with around 20–25 members of his family, following which a physical altercation broke out. Faizan alleged that the accused continued assaulting them even in the presence of the police.

The Dainik Jagran report makes no mention of any communal dispute or any connection to a Tiranga Yatra. Our team also found a statement from the Aligarh Police’s official X account regarding the incident. The post contains a statement from the Circle Officer and says that on August 13, 2026, at around 7:30 PM, police received information about a dispute between two groups of shopkeepers in Shamshad Market. The police immediately reached the spot and detained four disruptive individuals from both sides. A case was registered, and further legal action was initiated against both parties. The police also stated that the situation was peaceful.

The police statement also makes no mention of a communal dispute or any connection to a Tiranga Yatra.

For further verification, our team contacted News At-9 Chief Editor Shadab, who confirmed that the incident had no religious or Tiranga Yatra angle. He said that both parties were Muslims and that the dispute was related to a tiffin. We also contacted Salman Bahadur, brother of the victimized shopkeeper Faizan Bahadur. He confirmed that both parties involved in the incident are Muslims and that there was no communal dispute.

Conclusion:

DFRAC’s fact check establishes that the viral video is being shared with a misleading claim. The incident in Aligarh’s Shamshad Market involved a dispute between two groups of shopkeepers over a tiffin. It was neither a Hindu-Muslim clash nor an incident in which Muslim men attacked Jatav youths for taking out a Tiranga Yatra. Both parties involved in the altercation belong to the Muslim community.
