The state-turned UT has witnessed no presence of militants in the last decade leading to the escalation of misinformation and fake news on social media platforms. Amid this, some pak-based handles took to social media platforms X (formerly Twitter) and claimed that multiple Indian soldiers were killed and injured in an encounter between Indian occupation forces and Kashmir Fighters in Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir.
An account with the name Tactical Tribune posted an image and wrote: “Multiple Indian soldiers killed and injured in an encounter between Indian occupation forces and Kashmir Fighters in Kupwara, IIOJK”
Moreover. another pak handle shared the same image and made a similar claim. The preview link can be seen here.
Fact-Check
In the probe, DFRAC team found that the above viral claim is misleading. Two militants were killed in two anti-militancy operations instead.
A google keyword search in this regard led us to tweets posted on the handle of the Indian Army’s Srinagar-based Chinar Corps. The tweets informed about the death of militants in the two separate search and cordon operations (in Kupwara and Bandipoora) by the security forces
Not only this, but we also came across some recently published reports by Daily Excelsior, The Hindu, and Asia News Network. According to these reports, two militants were killed by the security forces in two anti-militancy operations in north Kashmir’s Bandipora and Kupwara districts on Wednesday (Nov 6, 2024).
Conclusion
It is evident from DFRAC’s fact-check that the viral claim alleging the death of multiple Indian soldiers has been misleadingly shared on X. Two militants were killed by the security forces in the two anti-militancy operations indeed.
