Fact Check
During the investigation, DFRAC found that the claim was false. We found multiple media reports regarding this currency note. According to ‘The Guardian’ published on 23 Oct, 2024 “Vladimir Putin has opened the expanded BRICS summit by issuing a call for an alternative international payments system that could prevent the US using the dollar as a political weapon.”
Furthermore, we also found a report from ‘Financial Express’ published on 24 Oct, 2024 stating “At the BRICS summit in Kazan, a symbolic banknote featuring the flags of member nations was unveiled, sparking discussions on creating alternatives to the US dollar and fostering a more independent economic system.”
Moreover, we found a tweet from the Official X handle of ‘BRICSInfo’ tweeted on 23 Oct, 2024 with the caption “JUST IN: Russian President Putin has been gifted a mock-up of a “BRICS bill” at BRICS summit in Kazan.”
Conclusion
It is evident from the DFRAC’s fact check that this is not an official BRICS Currency. This was a gift of a “BRICS Bill” to Vladimir Putin at BRICS Summit. Therefore, the claim of social media users is misleading.
