On social media, a video of a cargo plane dropping some parachutes amid the noise of firing of bullets has gone viral. While sharing the video users claim that “Israel’s deadly commandos have landed in Lebanon”(English Translation).
Fact Check
During the investigation, we found multiple reports matching the viral video. According to a report from ‘FoxNews published on 9 March 2024 stating “Video obtained by Reuters and released on Friday, March 8, appears to show parachutes failing to open as aid is being air-dropped from planes straight into Gaza City in the war-ravaged enclave ”.
Moreover, we found a video on the YouTube channel of ‘Guardian News’ uploaded on 9 March 2024 with the description: “Footage on social media appears to show aid falling to the ground, as people gathered to collect food and supplies. The Guardian has not been able to independently verify the date the footage was filmed”.
Furthermore, we also found a video on the Facebook Page of ‘DW News’ uploaded on 9 March with the caption “Gaza authorities say at least five people were killed after a parachute attached to a pallet of aid failed to open. The incident underscores the difficulty of getting food to people as famine looms in the enclave”.
Conclusion
It is evident from the DFRAC’s fact check that the viral video was from Gaza and dates back to March 2024, not from the ongoing Lebanon attacks. Therefore, the claim of social media users is misleading.
