Fact-Check
The DFRAC team investigated the above viral claim by conducting a keyword search on Google. Meanwhile, we found media reports from The Economic Times and News18 citing the major reason behind the ongoing farmers’ protest.
According to a recent media report published by News 18, the mega protest being held by the farmers is intended to make the Centre accept their list of demands. The farm bodies are demanding a law guaranteeing a minimum support price (MSP). Besides a legal guarantee for minimum support price (MSP), the farmers are also demanding implementation of the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations, pensions for farmers and farm labourers, farm debt waiver, withdrawal of police cases and “justice” for victims of the Lakhimpur Kheri violence.
In addition, News Website The Economic Times published a media report with the headline: “Farmers protest 2.0: What do they want? What is their strategy?”. In this report, The Economic Times mentioned: “The main demand this time, which was also a part of nearly a dozen demands besides the repeal of farm laws during earlier protests, is a legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP) for all the crops”.
Further, the report stated: “Another major demand is to implement the recommendations of the MS Swaminathan committee on agriculture. Other demands include better sugar cane prices, a pension of Rs 10,000 a month for every farmer above 60 years of age, stronger action against the accused in the Lakhimpur Kheri incident and a grant of land in Delhi for a memorial for the “martyrs” of the earlier farmers protest”.
Conclusion
It is clear from DFRAC’s Fact-check that the viral claim stating that many Sikh farmers are peacefully marching toward Delhi due to the Indian government’s decision to transfer their land to Hindus is misleading as the major reason behind farmers’ March is a legal guarantee for MSP.
