A claim is going viral on social media platforms , claiming that potato, the most versatile vegetable, when including in your daily diet can cause weight gain.
A user by the name of The weight plan wrote: “Potato Helps In #Weight-Gain. One medium potato contains about 150 calories, 37gms carbs, 4gm protein with almost negligible fats”.
Fact check
The DFRAC team investigated the viral claim. During the process we found an article published on the website named ‘Health shots’ citing the statement of Dr. Siddhant Bhargava who claims: “Trust me, potatoes are not the reason for your weight gain, ensure you eat everything in balance.”
But from another website @healthifyme, we found that Potato helps in Weight loss.
However, both articles also mention that cooking Potaoes with other fat-sourced ingredients will contribute to weight gain. Therefore, it should be eaten on a moderate level.
Conclusion
It is clear from DFRAC’S fact check that viral claim stating ‘Potato causes weight gain’ is false and misleading. If it is eaten in moderate level, it cannot cause weight gain.
