DFRAC Exclusive: An Anti- Muslim propaganda through Hindutva –Pop

As soon as BJP (Bhartiya Janta Party) came in power in the year 2014 India saw an unusual difference on the basis of religions, where people started targeting minorities especially Indian Muslims, some of these, then came forth in the form of cultural products such as music, poetry and cinema and became new tool through which the politics of hatred is sustained.

Earlier this year, India witnessed religious violence in several states during Hindu festivals, to give an answer to these riots, right-wing groups marched in Muslim majority areas and played loud music outside the mosques and made demeaning comments.

In whole scenario the pro right wingers suddenly start coming to lime light by writing and singing Anti- Muslim songs. Many music videos can be found on YouTube and other social media platforms, with pro- Hindu supporters loving and sharing them for their messages of hate, abuse and even threats to Muslim minority.

In this DFRAC Exclusive the team will expose the agenda of such singers and how through their songs they shamelessly demean Indian Muslims and spread hate.

Similarities in Hindutva-Pop Singers:

• They all use mostly saffron/orange color in the background.
• All these singers use words like, Sanatan, Hindutva, Yogi, Modi, Ram, etc. to attract a particular section of the society (i.e. Hindus)
• They use instigating words to increase their engagement.
• All account promotes violence
• Upendra Rana:

Rana came into Hindutva- pop in the year 2017, initially he used to sing songs in the praise of Hindu historians, then gradually, he started pin pointing Indian Muslims from his songs to gain the attention of Hindus which is in majority in India. Nothing is much exceptional about the appearance of Rana yet he has become the idol for many Hindus especially Rajputs.

The song entitled Narasimhanand Jagave, which was recorded at the Dasna Devi Temple in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, where Mahant himself is Yeti Narasimhanand. It depicts a sadhu in orange attire, and Rana praises him as the only defender of Hinduism.

He sings about the glorious history of this combatant caste, while also praising modern Thakur victors like Yogi Adityanath, asking those who have forgotten their heritage to take up arms.  ‘Hindu pride’ often fits with the themes raised by him. The instigating lyrics of the songs are like, “Dharm ke khaatir aage badh ke, ab hathiyaar uthao (Translation: For the sake of your religion, come forward and pick up your weapons).”

• Laxmi Dubey:

Laxmi Dubey, is another popular Hindutva pop artists who has uploaded several music videos on YouTube. Laxmi runs a YouTube channel with the name – Bhakti Mala with millions of views, where she engages in direct attack on Islam and anti-Muslim sloganeering. Her most-popular song has more than 50 million views.

She uses lots of provoking and insulating lyrics in her songs like, “Hindustan mien rehna hai toh vande matram kehna seekho” [Translation: If you want to live in India, learn to say Vande Matram]

Since the channel is created, i.e. 2^nd Nov 2015, the account has received more than 1.36 Billion views with nearly 2.5k videos.

• Wave Music:

This channel from Telangana came up with a song of Hanuman Shobha Yatra. The song on YouTube has shots of queues of cows, and men holding saffron coloured flags with Lord Hanuman’s face printed on them.

The company would initially produce bhajans and Bhakti music. That changed in the next two decades, with a shift towards devotional music with Bollywood tunes and now from the past few years they have shifted the focus on Hindutav- Pop.

The song lyrics goes like, Baba Mandir aako bana de Pakistan mai.”(Translation: Dear Lord , make a temple in Pakistan )

Since the channel is created, i.e. 29^th October 2014, the account has received more than 38 Billion views with nearly 18.7k videos.

Conclusion:

Hate- Pop songs is the new way through which a hateful propaganda is escalated in majority and minority class prevailing in the country. They use specific words and colors and promote violence through their hate – pop. Not only this, specific word usage is also kept in mind to attract certain sections of the society.
