Social media users have claimed that Alwar’s Raja Jai Singh had used the Rolls-Royce car as a garbage-lifting vehicle to avenge the disrespect from the British.
Omal Kanwar wrote a post on Facebook claiming that Alwar’s Raja Jai Singh reached the showroom of London’s famous car company Rolls Royce in formal costumes. When he asked the salesman the price of the car, the salesman insulted him as a beggar, a common citizen of India, and said ‘get out. Then Raja Jai Singh told his servant to call the same showroom of Rolls Royce that he was willing to buy a car. The car company welcomed him very nicely. Raja bought all the six cars parked in the showroom and paid to deliver them to India. He didn’t sit in the car himself. With all six cars given to Alwar municipality, he ordered that every car be used to lift garbage in Alwar state. Then the garbage was swept in front of the car and the city’s garbage began to be cleared by the car. This news spread like fire around the world and the honor of Rolls Royce began to be torn apart. …
In the report published by the newspaper magazine and Dainik Jagran that Raja Jai Singh of Alwar was disrespected by the British and thrown out of the showroom. After this, he bought a car and cleared the garbage on Alwar’s roads.
Fact check:
With the help of some special keywords related to the use of the Rolls-Royce car as a ‘garbage cart’ by Raja Jai Singh of Alwar, DFRAC did a simple search on the internet, we found many reports published by media houses. A report was published on the News18 website under the quote, “Did Maharaja Jai Singh really convert Rolls Royce car into a garbage cart”.
It has told in this report that there were three kings in the name of Jai Singh in Rajasthan. Jai Singh I, Jai Singh II, and Jai Singh Prabhakar. Jai Singh, I and Jai Singh II were the famous kings of Amer. Sawai Jai Singh II later settled in Jaipur as well. He was born on 03 November 1688 and died on 21 September 1743. It is described here that motorized vehicles did not start before 1885. The first motor-based vehicle was developed by Karl Benz in 1885. Rolls Royce was started in 1906. After the death of Maharaja Jai Singh II.
According to the report, this case is related to another Maharaja of Rajasthan, whose full name was Jai Singh Prabhakar. He was the Maharaja of Alwar state. It is said about him that in the beginning, he took great care of his people. He did a lot of good work for the people but later started spending the money of the state treasury on his glorious life in an unaccounted manner. He was very fond of expensive cars.
Maharaja Jai Singh Prabhakar of Alwar went to London in the 1920s. He was wearing a casual Indian dress. He was roaming in the city. That’s when he saw Rolls Royce cars in the showroom. He wanted to go inside the showroom to know something about the cars. Suddenly he was interested in buying new models of these cars. The salesman of the showroom found him to be an ordinary person, so he did not allow them to enter.
News18 Hindi quoted the Telegraph in the report – The angry Maharaja called the manager of the Rolls Royce car dealership. He revealed his identity to her. He then ordered to buy all the 07 cars parked in the showroom. He also said that these cars will be delivered to India by the same salesman who prevented them from entering the showroom. However, the salesman still had no idea what he had done. When he went to deliver the car to the Maharaja’s palace in Rajasthan, he saw the Maharaja there.
Without paying much attention to the salesman, the Maharaja asked his assistants to put every car in the municipality to collect garbage. This news spread all over the world, which gave a big blow to Rolls Royce’s brand and name. The company then immediately sent an apology via telegram to the Maharaja’s palace in Alwar. Also, the company offered him 07 Rolls Royce cars for free. The company said that what happened will never happen again. Then Maharaja removed those cars from the garbage collection work.
It is clear from this fact-check of DFRAC that King Jai Singh Prabhakar of Alwar used 07 Rolls-Royce cars to lift garbage to avenge the disrespect from the British and not Raja Jai Singh II.
Raja Jai Singh II was the famous king of Amer not of Alwar. Raja Jai Singh II is famous because of the name of Raja Jai Singh, who later settled in Jaipur. Therefore, the claim made by social media users is misleading.
