In Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand, there was a protest by the candidates and workers of the unemployed union regarding the paper leak and other irregularities in the recruitment examinations. During this demonstration, the police lathi-charged. Many videos and photos of police lathicharge are going viral on social media. At the same time, there are many such videos which are of old incidents, but they are being shared as Uttarakhand protests.
Sharing a video, a user wrote – “This is the constitutional way of police personnel”.
At the same time, many other users are also sharing this video.
Fact Check:
To verify the viral video, the DFRAC team first converted the video into multiple frames. After this, we did a reverse search and found this video uploaded on 01 Feb 2016 on ABP New’s official YouTube channel.
The description of the video states that when students belonging to the JNU Students’ Union and AISA (All India Students’ Association) reached the RSS headquarters on January 30 for a peaceful protest for justice in the Rohith Vemula case. During this, the Delhi Police mercilessly beat up the students. At the same time, this video has also been uploaded in many other media reports. Which can be seen here.
Conclusion:
DFRAC’s fact check confirms that the viral video is not of police lathicharge in Uttarakhand, but of lathicharge on students in Delhi in 2016. Hence the claim being made by social media users is false.
