News is making rounds on social media platform X(formerly Twitter) alleging that Bangladesh has reclaimed 1,008 km² of land after recent border clashes with India. News has been shared by a slew of users including Pakistan-based handles on X
An account by the name of Asad Nasir posted some images of Security Personnel and PM Modi with the claim that stated: “Bangladesh has reclaimed 1,008 km² of land after recent border clashes with India. A powerful moment for the nation, showcasing resilience and a step toward resolving long-standing tensions”.
Moreover, a Pakistani-based handle named Ironclad, better known for spreading misinformation posted an image and made a similar claim.
Following this, a handle of a Pakistani media outlet named The Pakistan Telegraph also shared the same post citing the same claim.
Fact-Check
The DFRAC team investigated this claim and found it to be false.
In our probe, at first, it was reported by Bangladeshi media outlets that Border Guard Bangladesh has reclaimed a 5-kilometre stretch of border territory along the Kodala River in Moheshpur upazila of Jhenaidah, strengthening Bangladesh’s sovereignty over the area.
Investigating further, a keyword search in this regard led us to the latest reports from The Economic Times, Jagran, NDTV and MSN. According to reports, the BSF on Tuesday rejected reports that the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) had taken control of a 5-km stretch of land belonging to India along the International Border as “baseless and irresponsible”.
Furthermore, the reports stated: “The area in question is on the Indian side, in Ranghat village of Bagda block, North 24 Parganas district. The International Boundary (IB) runs along the Kodaliya River, which is well-demarcated by reference pillars on both sides. The status of the IB and the duty pattern of the BSF have remained unchanged for decades,” the statement said.
Conclusion
DFRAC’s fact-check clearly shows that the viral news alleging that Bangladesh has reclaimed 1,008 km² of land after recent border clashes with India is misleading since BSF has dismissed these claims.
