On social media, a video of a raid in a hookah bar goes viral. While sharing the video users claim that “In the raid conducted at a hookah bar in Lucknow yesterday, a total of 30 people were caught, 15 boys and 15 girls. The girls were from well-off families. The special thing is that all the 15 boys were Muslims and all the girls were from Hindu families. There was not a single Muslim girl”.
Fact Check
On investigation, DFRAC found that this video dated back to August 2022 and was from Agra. We also found many media reports regarding this video. According to UP Tak’s report uploaded on 12 August 2022 “In Agra, Uttar Pradesh, three policemen of Hariparvat police station raided a cafe and caught young men and women in an objectionable state and also shot their video. They did not listen even after the pleas of the young men and women. After the video of the incident went viral, questions were raised about the working style of the police. After this, the then SSP took cognizance and got it investigated and suspended the three policemen with immediate effect on charges of indiscipline and tarnishing the image of the police”. Moreover, we also found a report from Dainik Jagran uploaded on 12 August 2022 stating “The police had raided a coffee cafe house and Friends zone cafe located in Sanjay Place, Agra, about 15 days ago. However, the boys and girls were adults, so they were warned and left on the spot”. (English Translation)
Conclusion
It is evident from the DFRAC’s fact check that this video dates back to August 2022 and is from Agra not from Lucknow. Moreover, the police have not mentioned anywhere that all the girls were Hindu and all the boys were Muslims. Therefore, the claim of social media users is misleading.
