An African woman who was visiting Rishikesh was in an accident, and instead of helping her, people took all of her belongings, according to a post shared on social media.

The user named Ali Shorab shared a picture and claimed that “South African Karina, visiting Rishikesh, was in an accident and injured for almost an hour. During this time, Indian people robbed her, took her shoes, earbuds and other things, instead of helping her…” Other users also made sarcastic comments about Indian culture.

Fact check:

To find out the reality behind the viral photograph and claim, DFRAC team searched for some keywords on Google. During the search, we found a tweet from Meerut Police. According to Meerut Police, a foreign national was injured in a road accident under the jurisdiction of Kankarkhera police station in Meerut. Some social media users claim that instead of helping the woman, people robbed her, but the woman had all of her belongings, except for earbuds.

The police said the accident was severe, and the car was badly damaged. Her earbuds are being searched for. No loot or theft was reported at the scene.

It is worth noting that Ali Sohrab has previously spread false news and hatred. DFRAC has done many reports and fact-checks on him, which can be read here.

Conclusion:

 It is clear from Meerut Police’s statement that the viral claim is false because no robbery or looting occurred. The woman had all her belongings, except for her earbuds, and Sohrab’s and other social media users’ claims are false.
