An old video of an earthquake in Turkey’s northwestern Duzce province is going viral with a misleading claim. Read- Fact Check

A video is going viral on social media sites. It can be seen in the video that a man jumps off a building to save himself from the earthquake. Social media users claim that people jump from the buildings due to turkey’s M7.8 powerful earthquake.

By sharing this video a social media user caption: “ A person throws himself from above to escape #earthqukaeinturkey #Turkey #syria #earthquakes.”

Fact check:

To know the reality of the viral claim the team of DFRAC first convert the video into several keyframes and afterward did the reverse image search of  those keyframes, the team found Yenisafak had covered this report on 23 November 2022, with a headline stating: “ Man injured after jumping from the balcony during an earthquake in Turkiye”

At the same time, the team found many other news media houses had covered this report in the year 2022.

The report further states, The teenager, who suffered 2 fractures in his arm, was discharged after his treatment in the hospital

04 people were injured in the 08.5- magnitude earthquake that occurred at Duzce. It was determined that Cagdad LACIN, who jumped from the 3rd floor of the apartment building where he lived during the earthquake, had 2 fractures in his arm. Lachin was discharged after his treatment in the hospital.

The earthquake that occurred in Duzce was felt in a wide area as far as Istanbul, Bolu, Sakarya, Ankara, Kocaeli, Kutahya, Bilecik, bursa, and Izmir.

In the statement made by the Ministry of Interior Disaster and Emergency Management presidency, it was stated that a total of 4 aftershocks, the largest of which was 3.96, occurred after the earthquake.

Conclusion:

It is clear from the fact check of DFRAC and several media reports that the viral video is of Turkey’s northwestern Duzce province and it is not related to the recent earthquake in Turkey. Therefore, the claim made by social media users is misleading.
