A one-minute and thirty-second video has gone viral on social media. The video depicts mosque workers collecting cash in sack bags. Social media users are sharing the video and falsely claiming it to be from Indian mosques.
One Twitter user shared the video with the caption: “See how much money comes in mosques. There is no tax on this money. Only temple money is taxed. The government pays salaries and pensions to clerics from temple funds. Donations given in mosques are used for Jihad against Hindus. Hindus are living in casteism with closed eyes.”
A YouTube channel also shared the same video with captions stating, “See how much money comes in mosques. There is no tax on this money, only tax on temple money.””
Fact Check:
Upon closer examination of the video, it was observed that the language written on the sack bags is Bengali, and the currency depicted is Bangladeshi.
Further investigation led the DFRAC team to find the same video uploaded on a Bangladeshi YouTube channel called ATN Bangla News. The video’s description states, “19 sacks of Tk (Bangladeshi currency) were found in the donation chest of the historic Pagla Mosque in Kishoreganj. The counting of this money is currently underway. In addition to Bangladeshi taka, a significant amount of foreign currency, including dollars, pounds, riyals, and gold ornaments, were found in the donation box.”
Conclusion:
Based on DFRAC’s fact check, it is clear that the claim made by social media users is misleading as the bags of money were not found in Indian mosques but in the historic Pagla Mosque in Kishoreganj, Bangladesh.
